The Obituary
The sun rose on Hattie Mae Davis, June 23, 1925 in Dallas County, Alabama, to the late Calep Howard and Rosie Holt. Hattie attended Public Schools in Mobile, Alabama.
On November 12, 1946 Hattie joined Granson Davis, Sr. in Holy Matrimony. From this union was born 11 children.
Hattie and Granson Sr started and raised their family together until Granson departed this life in July 1963. As Hattie struggled to keep her family together, she worked as a horticulturist at Ellis Nursery in Mobile, Alabama until she migrated to Long Beach, New York in 1975 with her children. She began work as a Nurse's Aid in order to support her family. Hattie also did domestic work to take care of her children. She instilled hard work ethics and respect to her children and always expected them to do their best at whatever they did.
Hattie joined the New Life Church of Christ Disciples of Christ in 1977. Hattie was a member of the Missionary Board, pastor's Aid, Willing Workers and Culinary staff. In the mid 90's, Bishop Marvin Creech appointed Hattie to the Mother's Board. Hattie was known for wearing a mean hat and she kept an assortment for all church occasions. She loved to sing and testify of the goodness of the Lord. She was well known for selling ices and giving the proceeds to the church
By her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren she was called Ma, Mom, Grandma and Madea. That term of endearment "Madea" was also used by those in the community.
Hattie was preceded in death by her eldest son Granson, Jr. and grandson Dominique Daniels. She leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Calep Howard of DE and 10 children: Ada McMoore of NY; Patricia McNeil (Oliver deceased) of NY; Bill Davis (Maudie Bell) of NY; Emma Davis of NY; John Davis (Patricia) of NY; Janice Daniels (Johnny) of VA; Evelyn Dukes (David) of FL; Demetrius Faulkner of DE; Willie Davis of NY; Tammie Davis of FL; 21 Grandchildren: Tiajuania, Marvin, Margie, Margo, Kinte, Oliver Jr., Jamella (Anthony), Warren, Latrice (Michael), Kellie, Granson III, Marcus, Anthony, Angela, Desmond, Diyonna, Lakesha, Devon, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Krystal; and 23 great grandchildren.
